TBS Social Action Committee
Chesed…Tikkun Olam…Social Action…In a world where not all people are fortunate enough to have enough to be employed, to eat, to clothe themselves or to enjoy the benefits of a worry-free life, Temple Beth Sholom is committed to making a difference. Congregants, including children, are encouraged to participate in a number of programs where we can make a difference.
A sampling of the programs for the 2008-2009 calendar year are listed below. If you would like to join those already involved, please contact the TBS office (856-751-6663) and look for the monthly column in Temple Talk.

Blankets from the Heart
Blankets are knitted or crocheted and delivered to the neonatal unit of Virtua Hospital. For information about size specifications, call the chairperson Della Feldman.
Project JELLY: Jerusalem English Language Library for Youth
English speaking families in Israel have a need for books in order to foster a love of literature in the English language. The program is run by the Association of American and Canadian Israelis, and Edith Kalech organizes this project in our community. Books in good condition for children from preschool to teens are collected and sent to Israel for distribution in Jerusalem and, more recently, to other locations throughout Israel, including the Hadassah Hospital’s Children’s Wing.
Kol Nidre Food Drive
Congregants are encouraged to bring a bag of non-perishable groceries to TBS as they come to Kol Nidre services. Food is donated to the needy.
Turkey Drive
Each year TBS collects turkeys for the needy before Thanksgiving. Look for details in Temple Talk.
Donations to Ancora Psychiatric Hospital
Clothing, household items, recreational materials including games, videos, books, arts & crafts supplies and greeting cards are all needed. Some items are used by the patients, other are sold in the thrift shop. Thanks to Cheryl Rosov for delivering the goods. Please keep the hospital in mind as you clean your closets for the fall season. To donate, call Cheryl.
Mitzvah Day 2009
Mark your calendars - our annual Mitzvah Day is set for May 3, 2008. Congregants of all ages participate in social action projects at TBS as well as other locations in the community. Look for information about an organizational meeting if you would like to join the committee. New ideas are always welcome. |
