Ellen Berju, Director of Early Childhood Education

Ellen has been Director of the Eric B. Jacobs Early Childhood Education Center since 2001. Prior to being named director, she taught in the Early Childhood Center since 1991. She has been here through the many transitions of a preschool to a full-scale daycare early childhood education center providing education for children from 6 weeks old through full day Kindergarten.

Ellen earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreational Therapy from Temple University. She was an Art Therapist at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center specializing in developing programs for Alzeheimer Units. Ellen served as Director of Creative Arts Therapy at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital coordinating the first program of its kind covering all medical surgical units and specializing in physical rehabilitation and pediatrics.

Ellen spent her summers working as a specialist at the JCC Camps at Medford and as the Director of Junior Camp and Assistant Program Director of Tall Pines Day Camp in Williamstown.

Ellen has been a member of the Early Childhood Directors Group of the Department of Jewish Education since 1991. She is a member of NAEYC (National Association of Education of Young Children), and the NJCCA (New Jersey Childcare Association).

Ellen’s two children, Candice and Jordan, were raised at Temple Beth Sholom. Jordan, now an adult, is an alumnae of the EBJ Early Childhood Education Center attending its first full day Kindergarten with Morot Harriet and Sharon. Ellen looks forward to some day seeing the next generation of her family come to TBS!
