Divorce: Text and Pretext
Led by Rabbi Lindemann and Rabbi Michael Katz
Tractate Gittin provides the basics of Jewish divorce law to this day, but this is not a “how-to” class. Nor is it simply about the legalities of writing and delivering a GET, a rabbinic divorce document. The text offers insights into the history and sociology of the Talmudic period: the dynamic relationship of the Jewish community in the land of Israel to the emerging community in Persia; the status of women, minors, and the disabled; and the impact of war upon legal procedures. Gittin also contains one of the most extensive sections of Aggada (Midrashic Legends) in all of the Talmud, through which we gain insight into Jewish responses to the rebellions against Rome and the destruction of the Temple, as well as the very beginnings of Rabbinic Judaism.
