Tractate Arakhin: Valuing Life led by Rabbi Lindemann
This tractate takes its name from the Hebrew word Erekh — Valuation. Its impetus is the last section of the Book of Leviticus (27:1-8), which deals with vows to dedicate the value of a person to the sanctuary. Clearly, assessing the value of a life has great relevance in this time of COVID and Black Lives Matter. But in evaluating a life, the text also considers such matters as gender, profession, and disability. The tractate goes on to additional issues, such as Lashon HaRa —literally, the evil tongue — speaking ill of people in gossip or slander and the impact of sin and forgiveness upon an individual’s psyche and soul. All interesting topics for study and discussion. Registration Fee: $70, includes text and additional materials.
